Population aging is accelerating almost everywhere around the world, with especially steep increases in currently young countries such as China and Korea. The unprecedented changes in age structure will have enormous economic and social implications. Adele Hayutin will provide a comparative perspective on the dramatic demographic shifts already underway around the world. She will describe how population aging varies across countries and she will highlight critical economic, social and political implications of the demographic shifts. Dr. Hayutin will also show how the relative youth of the United States could be a competitive advantage in the global economy.

Aging has long been associated with declines in memory and other cognitive abilities. Dr. Kramer will summarize the types of changes that typically occur, and discuss neurodegenerative disease and other biological mechanisms that drive these cognitive changes. He will emphasize the impact these cognitive changes can have on decision-making and financial management.

About the Speakers

Adele Hayutin, Ph.D, is a Senior Research Scholar at the Stanford Center on Longevity and Director of its Global Aging Program, which initiates collaborative research and public discourse on the challenges of population aging. During a twenty-year career as a business economist, she has specialized in issues and trends affecting business investment strategy. She currently focuses on economic and policy implications of global demographic change. She has developed a comparative international perspective that highlights demographic differences across countries and illustrates the unprecedented pace of critical demographic changes. Previously, she was chief economist of the Fremont Group (formerly Bechtel Investments), senior real estate analyst at Salomon Brothers in New York, and director of research at RREEF in San Francisco. Dr. Hayutin received a B.A. from Wellesley College and a Master's in Public Policy and Ph.D. in Economics from UC Berkeley.

Joel Kramer, Psy.D, is a Professor of Neuropsychology in Neurology and the Director of the Memory and Aging Center Neuropsychology program. He earned his doctorate in psychology at Baylor University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in neuropsychology at the Martinez VA hospital. Dr. Kramer is board certified in clinical neuropsychology. Dr. Kramer has been extensively involved in studying the cognitive changes associated with brain disorders for the past three decades. He has co-authored widely used neuropsychological measures of memory and executive functioning. Much of his work has been devoted to identifying the different ways in which aging and neurodegenerative diseases affect memory and other abilities and in utilizing these differences to improve differential diagnosis in clinic. Presently, Dr. Kramer's active areas of research use neuroimaging, neuropsychology, neuroimmunology, and genetics to study the underlying biological mechanisms of cognitive aging, the cognitive effects of cerebrovascular disease and frontotemporal dementia, and the relationships between cognitive functioning, behavioral control and reward systems.
