About the Panelists

Ann Winblad is the co-founder and Managing Director of Hummer Winblad Venture Partners. She is a well-known and respected software industry entrepreneur and technology leader. Ann began her career as a systems programmer at the Federal Reserve Bank. In 1976 Ann co-founded Open Systems, Inc., a top selling accounting software company, with a $500 investment. She operated Open Systems profitably for six years and then sold it for over $15 million.

Prior to co-founding Hummer Winblad Venture Partners, Ann served as a strategy consultant for prestigious clients such as IBM, Microsoft, Price Waterhouse, and numerous start-ups. Ann received a BA in mathematics and in business administration from the College of St. Catherine, as well as an MA in education and international economics from the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minnesota.

Heidi Roizen is a Venture Partner at Draper Fisher Jurvetson where she provides strategic advice to the firm's portfolio companies as well as helps to identify new investment opportunities. Ms. Roizen has achieved success as an entrepreneur, corporate executive, corporate director, venture capitalist and educator. She has held positions of leadership within a number of industry organizations, and is a recognized and popular spokesperson for the technology industry and entrepreneurial community.

After receiving her undergraduate and MBA degrees from Stanford University, Heidi co-founded T/Maker Company (an early personal computer software company) in 1983, where she served as CEO from inception through its acquisition by Deluxe Corporation in 1994. In 1996, Heidi joined Apple as Vice President of Worldwide Developer Relations. From there, Heidi entered the venture capital world. Heidi is also a Fenwick and West Entrepreneurship Educator in the Department of Engineering at Stanford University, where she teaches the course Spirit of Entrepreneurship.

Laura Roden is the founder and managing director of VC Privé, LLC. VC Privé is a boutique investment bank that raises money for high quality alternative asset funds, such as venture capital funds, hedge funds, and distressed debt funds. Before founding VC Privé, Ms. Roden was the Managing Director of The Angels' Forum (TAF), a leading association of individual and corporate early stage investors. Prior to running The Angels' Forum, Ms. Roden was President and CEO of the Silicon Valley Association of Startup Entrepreneurs (SVASE), the largest nonprofit in Northern California dedicated to helping technology entrepreneurs.

Before taking the helm at SVASE, Ms. Roden had spent a decade as chief financial officer and/or cofounder of several emerging technology companies. Ms. Roden's earlier positions include CFO of the television broadcasting division at Chronicle Publishing Company, and executive positions at Deloitte & Touche (management consulting), Whalen & Company (wireless telecommunications), H.P. Hood/Agrimark (consumer and institutional food product marketing) and Hill Holliday Advertising. Ms. Roden received her undergraduate degree from Harvard/Radcliffe and her MBA from Harvard Business School, where she was elected by the faculty to the Century Club.

About the Moderators

Catherine Berman currently serves as Astia's Senior Vice President of Entrepreneur Programs. As an experienced entrepreneur, Catherine founded a number of successful ventures including Global Brigades, Deloitte Center for Leadership & Community, Evins Technology and ITC. Prior to joining Astia, Catherine maintained a host of management positions, including Chief Executive Officer, Global Brigades Panama, Strategy and Operations Manager at Deloitte Consulting, LLP, Director of Marketing at Redefining Progress and Vice President of Evins Communications, LLC. Catherine has worked with venture-backed companies since 2000 and her international work experience spans from India to Israel with extensive work in Latin America.

Catherine graduated magna cum laude from Boston University and received her MBA from Oxford University, England, where she founded the Oxford Women in Business Network. She is passionate about the intersection of money and meaning and serves as a mentor for Hub Ventures Impact Fund.

Janelle Mitchell is the CFO of Cooking.com, a privately-held venture backed e-commerce company. Prior to joining Cooking.com, she held senior management positions at the Los Angeles Times Media Group and Tribune Broadcasting, where she worked in business development and finance. She was the CFO of several emerging growth venture-backed companies including Wired Ventures, Hungry Minds , GlobalEnglish and Elephant Pharmacy Holdings.

She started her career with Arthur Andersen & Andersen Consulting. She has a Bachelor of Science/Accounting degree from University of Delaware and an MBA in Finance from Loyola University. She is also a Certified Public Accountant.
