Law. Tracey Merwise, a labor and employment expert presents
the Top Ten Things Every Manager Must Know About
Employment Law. Tracey discusses the common
misconceptions around employment law, such as performance
problems, FMLA and termination. She not only shares lessons
learned by clients from being guided by these
misconceptions, she suggests alternative resolutions, which
can help minimize risk.
Top 10 Misconceptions in Employment Law
"If I ignore performance problems, they'll
resolve themselves"
"It's kinder to soften bad news when
counseling or terminating someone"
"If I think someone is mentally ill/an
alcoholic/addicted to drugs, I should talk to them about it

About the Speaker
Tracey K. Merwise is cochair of Severson & Werson's Labor
and Employment Practice Group. She advises and trains
employers on all aspects of workforce management and
specializes in developing strategic solutions that enable
employers to achieve business goals while complying with
legal requirements.
Since 1995, Ms. Merwise has focused her practice
exclusively on labor and employment litigation, advice and
counsel, and compliance. Prior to joining Severson & Werson,
Ms. Merwise served as Senior Labor and Employment Counsel at
SBC/AT&T and was associated vwith the labor and employment
departments of Heller Ehrman and Seyfarth Shaw. She has
litigated cases and provided expert legal advice on all
aspects of unionized and non-unionized workforce management.
Ms. Merwise received her J.D. from Harvard Law School in
1992 and holds a B.A. in Government cum laude from Dartmouth
College. She is admitted to the Bar in California and
Illinois and is a member of the Society for Human Resource
Management (SHRM), the Northern California Human Resources
Association (NCHRA), the Labor & Employment Sections of the
American and California Bar Associations, and the Bar
Association of San Francisco.
