Business at Mills College.
About the Panelists
Michael Hannigan, President and Co-Founder, Give
Something Back
Michael Hannigan is the President and Co-founder of Give
Something Back, Inc., California’s largest independent
business-to-business office supply company. GSB was started
in 1991 modeled on Newman’s Own food company. Company
profits are donated to non-profit groups selected by
customers and employees. GSB was named Corporate Grantmaker
of the Year in 2003 and Small Business of the Year in 2005
by the US Small Business Administration. They are a
Certified Green Business in Alameda County, a founding
B-Corp company, and have a 50 Kilowatt solar power system on
the roof of their headquarters in Oakland. Mike received his
BA in Philosophy from UCSD, and a Masters in Criminology
from UC Berkeley. He lives in Berkeley, California.
Peter Liu, Initial Founder and Vice Chairman, New
Resource Bank
Peter Liu is the founder and vice chairman of New Resource
Bank, which focuses on delivering a new standard in banking
service while promoting green and sustainable resources in
its communities. Opened in 2006, the bank has created new
financing options for renewable energy, green buildings and
other green business sectors. Mr. Liu was previously with
Credit Suisse and Chase Manhattan, where he focused on
energy and project finance. He has also been an air quality
regulator at the California Air Resources Board and an
engineer with Chevron. He currently serves on the boards of
the China U.S. Energy Efficiency Alliance, the Climate
Action Reserve, the Christensen Fund and the Roots of Change
Fund. He has also served as a clean technology investment
advisory board member to the California Public Employees
Retirement Systems and the California Teachers Retirement
Systems.
Mr. Liu graduated from the University of California at
Berkeley with degrees in chemical engineering and materials
science. He also graduated from Princeton University’s
Woodrow Wilson School with a Masters in public affairs.
Marisa Massie, Sr. Dir Global Sales Compensation,
Salesforce.com
Marisa Massie is a Senior Director in the Finance and
Operations team at salesforce.com. Massie has been with
salesforce.com for over 3 years. She is currently leading
the Global Sales Compensation team and formerly was the
Americas Controller. Massie has served on the salesforce.com
Foundation's Equity council and participated in the
BizAcadamy in support of interns at saleforce.com. Before
joining salesforce.com in May 2006, Massie held planning,
controller and operations roles at Chiron BioPharmaceuticals,
Cingular Wireless and Monsanto Agricultural Biotechnology.
Massie started her career at Ernst & Young in Chicago
focusing on entrepreneurial ventures and mergers &
acquisitions. Massie holds a bachelor's degree in business
and organizational design from University of Michigan and is
a Certified Public Accountant.
Moderator: Phillip Gordon, Director of the Center for Socially
Responsible Business at Mills College
Phillip Gordon has almost three decades of business and
academic experience in the Bay Area. His business experience
has been in regulated industries with major social
responsibilities: financial services (Charles Schwab,
Franklin Resources, and Wells Fargo) and health care
(Kaiser). He has consulted with a number of startups on
business and technology strategy. He managed an academic
center at the Haas School of Business, UC-Berkeley,
including a continuing conference series, formed strong
relationships with companies and other academic
institutions, and worked with faculty, students, and other
centers. He has taught at the Haas School of Business, the
Norwegian School of Management, and UC-Berkeley. He has
taught at the Lokey Graduate School of Business since 2004.
His courses include Management Information Systems,
Innovation & Entrepreneurship, Technology & Society, Social
Networks, Project Management, and Corporate Social
Responsibility/Green Business. He holds an MS in Zoology
from Rutgers Univ. and a PhC degree in Genetics from UC-Berkeley.
He is a long-time ACLU member, and a Life Member of the
Sierra Club.
