The Financial Women's Association Of San Francisco
Presents

"The 21st Century Neighborhood: Social, Economic and Environmental Sustainability"

An Industry Leadership Series Event
on
Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Join us for a lunch sponsored by Hanson Bridgett featuring Carrie Byles, Director of the renowned global architecture firm, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, and a leader in sustainable design.

Unless humankind changes the way we consume resources and build structures, ecological constraints impose limits to continued economic growth. Carrie will explain why the concept of sustainability is critical to us all - especially in the financial world - and how businesses and individuals can take advantage of the new economic opportunities a paradigm shift can produce. She will use as an example the Master Plan for Treasure Island at the mid-span of the Bay Bridge to illustrate how well-designed development can establish a new community, save the planet, and create economic opportunities.

About the Speaker

Carrie Byles (AIA, LEEDŽ AP, Director) is a director based in Skidmore, Owings & Merrill's San Francisco office with over 20 years of diverse experience in design, technology, and management, including special emphasis on projects with complex programmatic and technological requirements. Carrie is passionate about multi-disciplinary, research-based design. She believes in bringing all parties together as early in the design process as possible to spawn new ideas, establish collaborative working relationships, and create a strong foundation for the design.

With a background in both architecture and digital design, Carrie has a lifelong commitment to understanding how new technologies are changing the way we live, and she brings this perspective to SOM's projects. Examples of these advances can be seen in projects such as the Stanford Center for Innovations in Learning, the new Library and Information Technology Center at UC Merced, which is slated to receive Gold LEEDŽ Certification, and new multi-disciplinary research buildings for Harvard and Rice Universities.
