The Financial Women's Association Of San Francisco
Presents

"Frida Kahlo Tour at SFMOMA"

A Networking Series  Event
on
Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Join us for a private tour of SFMOMA's one-of-a-kind exhibit of Frida Kahlo's art and photographs. And come to Chevy's afterwards to debrief and network over margaritas and antojitos.

Kahlo's folkloric style - influenced by Mexican popular art - and her fantastical imagery earned her recognition among the Surrealists, but her intriguing persona and unmistakable originality propelled her beyond the confines of a specific movement to become a leading figure in modern art. This special limited exhibition commemorates the centennial of Kahlo's birth, and brings together paintings that span her career, along with a selection of her own collection of photographs, most of which have never been on public display. (Visit SFMOMA's site for more information).

About the Speaker

Frida Kahlo (July 6, 1907 – July 13, 1954) was a Mexican painter whose style is marked by the use of vibrant colors and the influences of Mexico's indigenous cultures as well as European schools, including Realism, Symbolism, and Surrealism. Many of her works are self-portraits that symbolically express her own pain and sexuality.

In 1929, Kahlo married the renowned Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. They shared political views, and he encouraged her artistic endeavors. Although she was recognized as an important painter, public awareness of her work did not become widespread until the 1970s. Prior to that, she was known primarily for her relationship with Rivera. Her "Blue" house in Coyoacán, Mexico City is a popular museum, donated by Diego Rivera upon his death in 1957.
