present

A Professional Development Series event:
"The Female Brain: How We Differ from Our Male Counterparts"

On Tuesday, March 27, please join the Financial Women’s Association in conjunction with Women’s Forum West & the UCSF Medical Center’s National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health for an informative and interesting discussion about The Female Brain: How We Differ from Our Male Counterparts. The speaker will be Dr. Louann Brizendine, noted author, UCSF neuropsychiatrist, and leading investigator in the area of the female brain.

Dr. Brizendine’s research has yielded intriguing and sometimes controversial findings, and this program is certain to provide interesting fodder for thought. About her recent book, The Female Brain, Dr. Brizendine said, "This book is a call-to-arms for women and society to rework the social contract that women have with employers throughout their childbearing years."

A few neurological differences between women and men from Louann Brizendine's The Female Brain:

  • Women use 20,000 words per day; men use 7,000 per day.
  • Women excel at knowing what people are feeling; men have difficulty spotting an emotion unless someone cries or threatens bodily harm.
  • Women remember fights that a man insists never happened.
  • Every brain begins as a female brain. It only becomes male eight weeks after conception, when excess testosterone shrinks the communications center, reduces the hearing cortex, and makes the part of the brain that processes sex twice as large.

The moderator for this program will be Nancy Milliken, MD, Director of UCSF’s National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health & Vice Dean, UCSF School of Medicine. Dr. Milliken was the principle investigator in 1996 when UCSF was competitively awarded the prestigious national designation as one of the first vanguard Centers for Women’s Health in the country. The UCSF Center of Excellence in Women’s Health is celebrating their 10th anniversary in 2007.
